Future Talk - Virtual Reality in Sports Broadcasting HD

Future talk This episode is about virtual reality in sports broadcasting. The guest is Sankar “Jay” Jayaram, a pioneer in the field of virtual reality and Chief Technology Officer of Intel Sports. Intel Sports is a division of Intel Corporation, the giant chipmaking company, and it’s dedicated to applying virtual reality to major athletic events like Olympic competitions and pro football games. Their VR products were widely used in the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea. Jay has been a leader in virtual reality for over 25 years, having cofounded the Virtual Reality Laboratory at Washington State University in 1994. He also cofounded several VR companies and his innovative work has had a major influence on the whole field of virtual reality. One of his companies, VOKE, was acquired by Intel in 2016, hence his current position there. He gives a good description of the workings of VR in sports, including the use of ''virtual cameras'' that enable one to view, or play back, an athletic event and view it from any vantage point at any time, even if no actual camera was at that location. Martin Wasserman hosts.
