Future Talk - Transforming Human Perception

Future talk This episode features an interview with Kara Platoni, journalism lecturer at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism, and author of the new book “We Have the Technology: How Biohackers, Foodies, Physicians, and Scientists are Transforming Human Perception, One Sense at a Time.” It details her travels to numerous facilities that are studying the science of human perception, how our sensory organs absorb information and how this information is integrated by the brain to give us a detailed picture of our surrounding environment. The journey takes us to well equipped laboratories where new advances are enabling us to restore impaired sight and hearing in new and exciting ways, to "biohackers" who implant electronic devices in their own bodies to generate brand new types of sensory experiences in their efforts to transcend the limitations of being human, to military facilities where new virtual reality programs are being used therapeutically to help soldiers overcome post traumatic stress disorder. Martin Wasserman hosts.
